Despite its name, this pattern is intended to imitate a backswimmer, the water boatman's larger, more aggressive cousin. In England, backswimmers are often called greater waterboatmen, hence this pattern's name.
This fly is designed to ride upside down like a natural backswimmer. Fish this pattern at the surface when trout are focused on returning backswimmers or use a sinking line to drag this fly down.
This is a great point to fly on a washing line setup using a Floating, Midge Tip or Hover line when both boatmen and backswimmers are active.
